Dans ce duo, Jeroen Van Herzeele (Ben Sluijs, Mâäk’s Spirit, Toots Thielemans, Chris Joris, Philip Catherine) et Stéphane Galland (Aka Moon, Ibrahim Maalouf, Tigran Hamasyan, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Malcolm Braff) ouvrent un nouveau chapitre de leur expérimentation musicale et improvisation.
Au fil de leurs carrières musicales bien remplies, Jeroen et Stéphane ont souvent croisé leurs chemins. L’un de leurs projets communs, Greetings from Mercury, était un groupe fusion mêlant jazz, acid jazz, rock et rap. Avec leur nouveau duo, ils continuent d’allier différents genres et paysages sonores.
Avec des configurations variées et des combinaisons de saxophone, synthétiseurs modulaires, EWI, batterie et électronique, Jeroen et Stéphane vivent la musique en direct dans un cadre interactif, utilisant plusieurs instruments à vent, des overdubs, des percussions et de l’électronique, engageant des dialogues passionnants sur des thèmes et des métriques. Le résultat est à la fois enivrant et entraînant, une musique qui peut aussi bien être analysée que dansée.
Leur premier album s’intitule Songshan, du nom de l’une des cinq montagnes sacrées de Chine, considérée comme le centre du ciel et de la terre. L’album est sorti en juin 2025 par le label néerlandais Challenge Records.

Met dit duo schrijven Jeroen Van Herzeele (Ben Sluijs, Mâäk’s Spirit, Toots Thielemans,Chris Joris, Philip Catherine) en Stéphane Galland (Aka Moon, Ibrahim Maalouf, TigranHamasyan, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Malcolm Braff) een nieuw hoofdstuk in hun muzikaleexperimentatie en improvisatie.De paden van Jeroen en Stéphane kruisten elkaar al meermaals gedurende hunsuccesvolle carrières.
Zo speelden ze onder andere samen in het project Greetings from Mercury, een fusiongroep die jazz, acid jazz, rock en rap mengde. Via dit nieuwe duoblijven ze genres en geluiden vermengen.Met gebruik van verschillende bezettingen en combinaties van saxofoon, modulairesynths, EWI, drums en elektronica, beleven Jeroen en Stéphane live muziek op eeninteractieve manier. Blaasinstrumenten, overdubs, drums en elektronica komen samen inboeiende dialogen over thema’s en metriek. Het resultaat is zowel doordacht als groovy, muziek om te analyseren of op te dansen.
Hun eerste volledige album kreeg de titel ‘Songshan’, naar een van de vijf heilige bergenin China, het mythische centrum van hemel en aarde. Het album verscheen in juni 2025 bij het Nederlandse label Challenge Records, een dag voor het duo het podium van JazzMiddelheim besteeg.

With this duo, Jeroen Van Herzeele (Ben Sluijs, Mâäk’s Spirit, Toots Thielemans, Chris Joris, Philip Catherine) and Stéphane Galland (Aka Moon, Ibrahim Maalouf, Tigran Hamasyan, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Malcolm Braff) are opening another chapter in their musical experimentation and improvisation. Jeroen and Stéphane crossed paths many times during their storied musical careers.
One of their mutual projects was called Greetings from Mercury, a fusion group thatmixed jazz, acid jazz, rock and rap. With their new duo, they continue to blend genresand soundscapes.Using different settings and combinations of saxophone, modular synths, EWI, drumsand electronics, Jeroen and Stéphane experience live music in an interactive context. Themultiple horns, overdubs, drums and electronics are the platform for exhilaratingdialogues about themes and metrics. The result is both heady and groovy, music thatcan be analyzed or danced to.
Their debut album is titled ‘Songshan’, after one of China’s five sacred mountains, thecentre of heaven and earth. The album was be released in June of 2025 by the Dutchlabel Challenge records.
